Read aloud. See every word you got right.

Open a book in the language you are learning and read it out loud. Each word turns green when Pronounced Pages hears it and red when it was skipped or misread, while the translation unfolds alongside, one sentence at a time. Bring your own EPUBs or pick one from the shelf — and, on the Pronounced plan, get coaching on how each word sounded.

El sol salía despacio sobre las colinas y el pueblo despertaba.

The reader on a desktop: the chapter on the left, each word coloured as it is heard, the translation on the right.

How it works

  1. Read aloud, get green and red

Your browser's own speech service listens as you read; Pronounced Pages never receives or stores what you say. A word you said turns green; a word you skipped or misread turns red. Tap any sentence to jump there, and see your accuracy at the end of each chapter.

  2. Bring your own books

Import any DRM-free EPUB. It is parsed and stored on your device, and the file never leaves it. When on-device translation is not available, only the sentences being translated are sent, and they are not stored. Or start with a free Spanish book from the shelf.

  3. Translation alongside

The translation of the sentence you are reading appears next to it, one sentence at a time, so you look across only when you need to. Shelf books carry a hand-aligned English translation; your own books are machine-translated as you read.

  4. Pronounced: hear how you sound

On the Pronounced plan a word you read but did not quite nail turns yellow, and tapping it shows its score. Tap a sentence to check it on its own and see a score for every word.

Questions

Which books can I read?

Any DRM-free EPUB you own — from Project Gutenberg, Wikisource, publishers that sell without DRM, or your own library. Kindle and other DRM-protected purchases cannot be opened. The shelf has free Spanish books from verified public-domain editions, graded roughly A2 to B2. Where to get books.

Which languages?

Spanish, Italian, French, German and Portuguese, with the translation into English or another language you choose. The shelf is Spanish today.

Which browsers?

Chrome and Edge on the desktop, Chrome on Android, and Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Firefox can read and translate but has no speech recognition, so words do not colour there. Pronounced Pages installs on your phone, tablet and desktop like an app and works offline for the books you have.

What happens to my books and my voice?

Your books stay on your device. Only the sentence being translated is sent, when needed, and it is not stored. Your voice goes to your browser's own speech service — which may use the browser maker's servers — and never to us; coaching audio is streamed to Azure Speech for scoring and never recorded by us.
